Those who are constantly busy praising and giving thanks to God are the ones who enjoy the Christian walk the most. Most people are very unthankful to God. We are quick to call for Him when we are in trouble or when we need something or want something. God loves to help people in distress, and he loves to give good things to His children. But when God helps us in a situation, are we grateful? Do we say thank God? Or do we just forget about God until the next time we get into trouble.
We have so many blessings from God that we could never name them or think of them all. Every breath we breathe is a gift from God. That’s God’s air that He gives us permission to breath. Most people are very ungrateful, as though God owed it to us. But if God takes away our breath, even for half a minute, we get frantic.
Are we grateful for the bodies we live in? We talk about our bodies as though they belong to us. But they do not belong to us. God made these bodies, and since we never had anything with which to buy these bodies from God, these bodies are still His property. God is only allowing us to use these bodies so that we can use them for the purpose and mission for which He has made us. But while we are fulfilling His mission, there are many things about these bodies that God allows us to enjoy.
Normally, we who live in North America enjoy freedoms which some people in other parts of the world can only dream of. We can make our own choices. We can worship God in the way that we believe to be appropriate. Most of us have plenty to eat. We have medical care. And there are many other blessings that people do not enjoy in places where there is terrible famine or where hostile governments decide for them what they are allowed to believe. In some places the only ones who can get medical care are the very few who are rich enough to pay for it. If we are not thankful for these blessings, we have no right to complain when God takes these blessings away.
Praise and thanksgiving energizes the power of God in our lives. In the prison of Philippi, after being brutally beaten and with their feet in the stocks, when Paul and Silas sang praises to God, God shook the prison apart for them. God tore apart the walls of Jericho when He heard His people shout His praises. The mighty giant Goliath fell before the young shepherd, David, who spent His time singing the praises of God while he watched the sheep. We all have troubles, but we also have many blessings that we can be thankful for. And let’s be thankful, not only for pleasant things, but also for unpleasant things, because God makes all things work together for good to them that love God. It’s God’s to work out the problems. It’s our work to do the praise.
