The person who fears God has no reason to fear anything else. When the Bible tells us to fear God, that doesn’t mean that we live in constant terror, afraid that for any accidental error God is waiting for the chance hit us hard. Actually, the opposite is true. David says in Psalm 103:11-13, “For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward them that fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him.”

So, then, what does it mean to fear God? It means that we live knowing that God is always aware of everything that we do, everything that we say, and everything that we think. It means that we know that we are not getting away with anything, as Paul said in Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked.” And as he said also in Romans 14:12, “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” If I believe that some day I must give account to God for everything, I won’t be looking at pornography. I won’t be telling lies. I won’t be lusting after another man’s wife. When I know that I have failed God I will be quick to repent, and I will be quick to forgive anyone who has offended me.

The person who fears God does not need to fear what man or Satan can do to him. As David also said in Psalm 34:7, “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them.” If anybody ever had things to be afraid of, it was David. As a young shepherd, he fought a bear. He also fought a lion. Then he had to fight Goliath, the giant that everybody else was running away from. The jealous king Saul hunted David like an animal. He fought several wars against the Philistines, against the Amalakites, against the Syrians, and against the Ammonites. Through it all, God took care of him and protected him. That’s why David said in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my Salvation; whom then shall I fear?

Does that mean that if we fear God and serve God we will never suffer or have trouble? Of course not. The Bible says that everyone who lives godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. Stephen was stoned to death. All the apostles were brutally beaten and abused, and all the apostles except for John died violent deaths. Jesus Christ Himself was murdered in the most barbaric way that can be imagined. Fearing God doesn’t mean that we won’t have to suffer, but it does mean that we do not have to be afraid of what suffering we will face, because God will give courage such as a human cannot naturally have.
