Fatherhood is the most awesome responsibility that God can give a man because God is entrusting to the father the care and nurturing of children whom God dearly loves. Long before the child understands who God is, in the eyes of the child, daddy and mommy will be the source of all wisdom, strength, and care. Eventually that child will come to age and will be responsible to make a choice for or against salvation in Christ Jesus. The teaching and nurturing that the child receives from his parents will be the major factor to direct his salvation decision and determine whether the child will spend eternity in heaven or in hell.
There is a good reason why God has chosen for Himself the title of “FATHER.” It is the responsibility of father of the family to demonstrate to his children what God the Father is like. If the father of the family is harsh with his children, if he is selfish, and if he is irresponsible and makes foolish decisions, the child will possibly have an adverse reaction against the One whom we call the Heavenly Father. If the father of the family is firm but tender, if he loves the children and their mother, and if he protects and directs the family wisely, when they children come to age they are likely to decide, “I want my dad’s God to be my God. I want God to make my like my dad.”
It is impossible to be the right kind of Dad without God’s help, because God is the only one who knows how to do the job right. Human fathers get tired, but God doesn’t. Human wisdom is limited, but God’s wisdom is unlimited. Human resources are finite, but God’s resources are infinite. In order to succeed in his assignment to raise children for the kingdom of heaven, an earthly father must constantly draw on the infinite resources of the Heavenly Father. In order to have those resources available to him, a dad must always guard his relationship with God at all times in a pure conscience. The key to being a good dad is to be constantly asking God for help in every situation. God wants you to be successful in your assignment to be a father, so don’t be shy to always ask for help.
Nobody knows those children better than God does. God knew all about them long before they were conceived, and nothing about the children surprises God. God knows those children better than they will ever know themselves. Only God can anticipate what each child will face, not only in childhood, but also throughout his whole life. God always knows exactly what to do in every situation. It is the sacred duty of the earthly father to present the child to the Heavenly Father so that the child will always have access to those heavenly resources to face the challenges of life and eternity.
