Parenting requires time, material resources, and lots of work. A parent can no longer live his life the same way as he did when he was single. To do the job right someone must set aside certain freedoms. A parent can’t spend his money as he pleases or use all his time for himself. But for the heart of a Spirit-filled parent, these sacrifices are a delight, not a burden, because he is raising the child for God, not for himself.
Our secular society has become arrogant and self-centered. People seek satisfaction in pleasure and self-indulgence. They seek fulfillment in luxury. Success is measured by the accumulation of wealth. A person sets his own selfish goals, totally unconcerned about the purpose for which God created him. Anybody who comes between him and his goals is expendable, or even an enemy. If a pregnancy comes between a woman and her secular goals, the annoyance is eliminated in an abortion clinic. Motherhood is considered a demeaning occupation.
That is not the way God intended for us to live, as though life is only all about us. A heart controlled by the the Holy Spirit sees others as having intrinsic value. People are valuable because they are made by God and in God’s image. For such a person there is no higher calling than that of parenthood. Children are not an obstacle to wealth. Children are wealth. It is not just us loving children, it God in us loving the children.
Nobody can do the job of parenting correctly without God’s help. We get tired and frustrated. There are always going to be surprises that we cannot anticipate. Our physical strength and material resources are limited. But God’s strength and resources are not limited. Nothing surprises God. There is no situation in which God doesn’t know exactly what to do. Success in parenting comes only by depending on God in every situation. The good parent is always asking God for help.
