If God has given you an awesome husband, you have much to be thankful for. A Spirit-filled husband doesn’t just love his wife. It is God in that man loving that wife. That’s the only way it can be done right. God’s commandment is, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25). Christ also commanded His disciples, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” (John 13:34).

Who can possibly obey these commandments on his own power? Who can generate in his own heart a love as strong as that of Jesus Christ who sacrifice Himself for us on the cross? No man can do that with his own power. So, how can God expect us to obey these commandments? That is because the born-again Christian is indwelt with God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is infinitely in love with Jesus Christ and with His people. So then it is the Holy Spirit of God in the believing husband who is loving his wife with a love much stronger than what that man is able to generate on his own. That’s the way that God means for it to be done.

But that’s not the way it always happens in reality. Why? because, although every believer is indwelt with the Holy Spirit, not every one is filled with the Holy Spirit. To be filled with the Holy Spirit means to be controlled by the Holy Spirit. There are many things in a believer’s heart that can hinder the work of the Spirit in his heart and take control away from the Spirit of God. There can be self-centeredness. There can be pornography. There can be arrogant pride. There can be dishonesty. A man can be entertaining his mind with impure thoughts. There can be unconfessed sin of any kind.

No husband can do his job right without God’s help. The secret to victorious Christian living in any aspect of life is to be constantly asking God for help and to be totally depending on Him for victory over sin. Just before He went to the cross, Jesus warned His disciples, “Pray that ye enter not into temptation.” They didn’t take that warning seriously, and instead of praying they were sleeping. Peter was determined that he was never going to deny his Lord. But his determination was not enough, and he failed shamefully. We will also fail shamefully if we depend on our own strength and determination to resist sin and Satan. By depending on God’s infinite strength and by constantly asking Him for help we overwhelming prevail against the kingdom of darkness.
