Satan is terrified of the Spirit-filled Christian who lives by the faith of Jesus Christ. The demons know that Christ is the almighty Son of God. When the Lord Jesus walked in this world, the devils screamed in terror at the sight of Jesus. Today the devils are no less afraid of the Lord Jesus as he works by His Holy Spirit through a committed believer who is living by faith of the Son of God. But faith cannot dwell in the same heart where there is anger, carnal greed, lust, or hidden sin. Faith and sin just cannot live together in the same heart. But if we trust God for a clear conscience, then God listens to our prayers. And when God listens to our prayers, Satan trembles. I John 3:21, 22 tells us, “Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”
To live by faith means that we depend on God for everything. Satan is not afraid of any human being. If we depend on our own strength, the devil will defeat us quickly and easily every time. But the demons tremble when they see a believer depending on God’s power. Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scotland, said once, “I fear the prayers of John Knox more than all the assembled armies of Europe.” And with good reason. When the man of God prays, the powers of evil darkness panic. They have no defense against the prayers of a man of God.
We have very little understanding of how much the Lord Jesus loves us. Jesus didn’t just risk His life for us. He gave His life for us. Nobody ever suffered as much as Jesus did. He suffered our hell for us. If He was willing to do that for us, then certainly He is interested in hearing our prayers. But the Bible says that “without faith it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6). And faith cannot thrive in the same heart where there is anger, greed, selfishness, unwillingness to forgive others, or hidden sin. Faith simply cannot work in the same heart where such things are allowed to dwell. We must ask God to cleanse our heart from all such things and to make the changes in our hearts that the Lord Jesus will be pleased with. Then when we pray the kingdom of Satan will panic.
