Bringing a new baby into the world is no small job. A husband may sympathize, but he cannot really understand what it’s like to experience a pregnancy with the mood swings, the morning sickness, the swelling feet, the cramps, then the contractions and several hours of labor. The only man who really understood it all was the Lord Jesus Himself. He put it this way: “A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour iis come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy thaat a man is born into the world” (John 16:21). The discomfort and pain may be acute, but the blessing and joy of a new child in the family last for a lifetime. In fact, if every heart enjoys salvation in Jesus Christ, the blessing is for all eternity.

In the Bible, whenever God sent a baby to His people He sent it as a blessing. Abraham waited till he was a hundred years old, and Sarah till she was ninety, before they were blessed with Isaac. Hanna wept and pled with God till she was finally blessed with baby Samuel. When the angel Gabrael announced to Zacharias and Elizabeth that, after so many years of waiting they were to be blessed with the baby John the Baptist, the angel told the father, “Thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth” (Luke 1:14). When Elizabeth finally gave birth, the Bible says, “Her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her” (Luke 1:58).

Many years before, when king David kept the ark of God in the house of a man named Obed-edom for three months, the Bible says that God blessed the man’s family and all that he had. And what, exactly was that blessing? In I Chronicles 26:4, 5 the Bible specifies that the blessing was that God gave the man eight sons. And the list goes on. Of course, all these children were a blessing because their parents brought them up to love and serve God.

Maternity is a super power which God has entrusted only to women. The new life which starts in mother’s womb lasts for ever. So, is it worth it? Consider that there is nothing in this world that we can take to heaven with us. Nothing, that is, except for our children. Yes, it hurts for a while. Yes, there will be lots of expenses. Yes, there will be lots of diapers to change and feedings in the middle of the night. Yes, there will be lots of runny noses to wipe and skinned knees to patch up. But the relationship will last forever. Sure, it’s worth it. God thinks so.
